Having said that my old man has the same motor in a pickup and it’s a gutless wonder. Go figure huh?

A lot of that difference between two supposedly-identical engines can be chalked up to discrepancies in the camshaft grind or cam timing misalignments.

It's not unheard of for folks to check the cam timing of junkyard GM v8 engines, and then use offset cam dowels before installing the engine into something more valuable.
