EC IL | You are 100% correct to ask the questions about whether you are leaving money on the table, so good job starting there. Referencing a few items you talked about.
Gauge wheels being loose at their front attachment point wears the tire's rubber faster where it contacts the disk opener. The gauge wheel/disk contact especially on IH planter is critical in that the gauge wheel touching the disk itself creates both the limit for the dirt to "lift" and simultaneously forms the little berm that the closing disks will push back over the trench a 1/2 second later. Since IH planters have such a narrow V (better for wet conditions) the gauge wheels always need to be in contact with the disks. Buying new wear parts for the gauge wheel pivots is probably about the same cost as new tires.
Row closers need to meet diameter minimum spec or they won't knock down the berm down that was created at the gauge wheels. I believe the manual tells you that diameter.
Press wheels need to be soft like a flat tire, not dirt-filled and firm. This lightly seals the row and makes the chevron pattern that helps the soil crack open to let things sprout better after a beating rain. These collect dirt internally and get firm. They should be opened up and have the dirt removed every year.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking the time to find the absolute most worn parts and replacing just those. Not all row parts wear the same. | |
