| Early 5.4s (2 valves) like to shoot the spark plugs out of the barely threaded holes. Later 3 valve motors (04+) got redesigned and the spark plugs snap off inside the holes. Both have probably been fixed by now with how old they all are.
3 valves had a more complex and problematic timing system.
3 valves make quite a bit more power everywhere.
You get a 4 speed with the 2 valves and a much better 5 speed with the 3 valve.
They both need exhaust studs and gaskets every 5-7 years.
I'd pick a 2 valve for longevity, they will last forever with some maintenance. I don't think a 3 valve is horrible though. | |
