JAnderson - 1/21/2025 09:34 If staying angus, $5k should get a pretty good bull. Everyone and their brother sells angus bulls= best bang for your buck. If they sire 100 calves that’s $50/hd bull cost with 0 residual. Of course have to figure the bulls other expenses. Can you AI for $50/hd by the time you figure labor and equipment cost? And you still need a clean up bull. I don’t see where AI makes much sense for an average commercial herd.
Hi James, When we had fewer cows, I never thought it made sense to AI. But now I have 15 bulls running around doing stupid bull things, and it just seems to cost so much more. I cant have one bull handle 100 cows here. I think bulls are like a combine, you are just 10 minutes away from it breaking down and having to bite off a big expense. We had a bull get his tool bit by a snapping turtle last year, one is always hurting a leg or foot breeding, etc, etc. It helps we have fall and spring cows to spread around the bull needs, but I mainly wanted to try this to get better genetics and timely calving. We shall see.....it has been educational.
I’d start selling Bull. 15 on 200 too many.

Hi Patrick,

I should have explained better.  We have 500 cows for that many bulls.  We just were AI'ing 200 head to try it out.

Thanks for your quick response. I can quite scratching my head! So has that set of 200 been with any bulls? When did you AI them?

If I remember correctly, we AI'd the first  group of 100 about sixty days ago, with the last 100 heifers following at 45 days ago.  Then we turned in the bulls a week or 10 days later.  Mainly because we needed a place to go with the bulls.  They should not have had any "work" to do until the gals came into heat again 21 days after the AI was done.
