If staying angus, $5k should get a pretty good bull. Everyone and their brother sells angus bulls= best bang for your buck.

If they sire 100 calves that’s $50/hd bull cost with 0 residual. Of course have to figure the bulls other expenses.

Can you AI for $50/hd by the time you figure labor and equipment cost? And you still need a clean up bull.

I don’t see where AI makes much sense for an average commercial herd.

Hi James,

When we had fewer cows, I never thought it made sense to AI. But now I have 15 bulls running around doing stupid bull things, and it just seems to cost so much more. I cant have one bull handle 100 cows here. I think bulls are like a combine, you are just 10 minutes away from it breaking down and having to bite off a big expense. We had a bull get his tool bit by a snapping turtle last year, one is always hurting a leg or foot breeding, etc, etc.

It helps we have fall and spring cows to spread around the bull needs, but I mainly wanted to try this to get better genetics and timely calving. We shall see.....it has been educational.

100 calfs is just a average number of calf’s sired over the bull’s life (have to have some realistic number to go off of). I find it easier to figure costs that way. Some bulls won’t get 1 before they are out of commission and some bulls might run 7-8 years before they are done.

I do understand bulls doing bull things and it looks like you have plenty of reserve bulls.
