Subject: RE: John Deere 5020 transmission locked up

Faunsdale, AL
Got a 6030 that’s doing the same thing. I think it’s probably a problem in the synchronizers and shift collar on top shaft. I think they all have detent balls inside that actually hold the shift collar engaged on the gear. It feels to me like the balls are galled or possibly rusty and won’t allow the shift collar to move. There could be wear on the collar, gear and shaft as well.

It can help to shut off engine, but then you must defeat the neutral safety switch to restart once you get it into gear. Sometimes it shifts so easily it’s hard to believe the next one may be nearly impossible. Other times, shutting the engine down doesn’t help. Sometimes I can push the clutch in and shift when still rolling and it’ll go in easy, other times all I accomplish is to get it hung in between and where it’ll grind if I let the clutch out. My tractor sits a lot, but it has been used spring and fall every year pulling a drill and grain cart.

We’ve been dealing with this for a couple years now and have always been able to work with the shifter and eventually get it to move into one gear or the other. The difficulty seems to be in the shift into/through the 3, 5, 7, or 8th gear position. I can shift from neutral up to the low gear and back out to neutral without any problem, but shifting into the high gear from either neutral or reverse is a problem with the shifter in the transmission frequently locking up, not quite in either the forward gear or reverse or between the forward gear and neutral. I’m pretty sure the detent springs and balls in the shift collar or the divets in the top shaft are worn. Could be all wrong.

It’ll usually grind if you let out on the clutch, but I’ve been using that cautiously to try to get it to make the shift. Not actually grinding it in but snatching it hard into engagement. I’m at the point where I’m not so worried about saving the parts, I’ve got a parts transmission for when I get it torn down for repair.

I’ll check the linkage isn’t hung up below the console but it doesn’t act like that at all. I would be interested in any solution anyone has found, ever what parts are damaged on top shaft if you have found that. I have been around 2 5020’s since the 1960’s and 3 different 6030’s from the 70’s to the present one. Have repaired two with broken rivets in the shift fork when the tractor was hung in a gear but the shifter would move freely, but this is a different problem than I’ve ever had before.
