If staying angus, $5k should get a pretty good bull. Everyone and their brother sells angus bulls= best bang for your buck.
If they sire 100 calves that’s $50/hd bull cost with 0 residual. Of course have to figure the bulls other expenses.
Can you AI for $50/hd by the time you figure labor and equipment cost? And you still need a clean up bull.
I don’t see where AI makes much sense for an average commercial herd.
I guess it depends. I have semen in tank that costs me $5/straw. Buying sons of said bull will cost 8000 to 15,000. Not everyone has this scenario but ai can be very cost effective.
You should look into the sale averages of the two operations that the op used to ai his cows. Likely north of 14,000 per bull. |
