southern MN | Never really seen such a thing.
Where would the melted water go, it would create a terrible ice ring around it when the water rolls off to the edge.
Wouldn’t want to pay the bill on that, can’t imagine the btu’s needed.
When it’s actually cold snow isn’t slippery at all, and even ice becomes less slick.
Throw a handful of sand, gravel, etc on the walkway and good to go.
In town the common thing to do these days is slather enough salt on it to melt it off, but I sure wouldn’t want the cost and damage most of that stuff does. And you still get into the refreshing of the water somewhere as it has no where to go - in town thry can get to the nearest curb drain and let it flush to the freshwater rivers.
Oh, I guess I have seen such a thing - my town had a steam electric plant, and to cool the water they circulate it downtown to offer cheap heating to the downtown businesses. The power plant is a few blocks away. The steam tunnel under the sidewalk gets warm enough to 90% thaw down that sidewalk. Some businesses get cheap heat, the whole town has relatively expensive electricity…
