Amboy, IL | The difference between normal caged production and "cage-free" is huge if you walk thru the buildings. The chickens' brain can only distinguish 20-30 individual animals. So, when they're in a caged design they develop a pecking order within that specific cage (10+/- chickens) and they learn the animals in the cages on each side of them. Then they feel comfortable and produce better than when they are scared all the time when they are in a cage-free pen with 3,000 animals. But the liberals want them to have more room to fly (2-5 feet) and move around, but they usually just get in fights and cause more death loss and lower production. Also, the feeders and waters are a source of fighting as compared to the cages that have enough space for each chicken. Every manager of a egg production farm would say the same, but now most states and most large food companies followed the CA mandate. So over the last 5 years the large egg producers had to build new buildings with a new design. All that capital was unnecessary for the best & most efficient production and the safest environment for the animals but PETA thought they knew better and lobbied CA to mandate cage-free by Jan. 1, 2025. Cage-free also takes more labor to train the birds to nest (lay eggs) in a specific place. The eggs are usually dirtier. The Cage-free hens have half of their feathers pecked out of their butts and are in constant fear of fights.
