We've gone to a fall calving cow herd for a couple of reasons. One is that with irrigation we have the ability to provide the best quality feed of the year during calving and breeding. Grass alfalfa clover regrowth after one cutting in the late spring.. A unique situation for sure but matches forage quality with reproductive needs better than any other calving season here. The downside can be a bad winter but usually doesn't happen until cows are mostly bred. In the eventuality of a bad winter and later in winter we set up creep pens with quality hay and top quality lick tubs. Takes some pressure off of cows and helps the calves.
