Do you guys consider a cow’s longevity as a trait to be considered when selecting replacement heifers? Let’s say you have a ~12 year old cow who’s bred reliably and raised a consistently good calf, but maybe not the best of the bunch, every year. That’s something I like to see in my herd but whether it’s something a cow passes down to her daughters I don’t know.
I call longevity the forgotten trait. It is often overlooked.
But it is the trait that makes you the most money!
Cows should last 10 to 12 years. 13 to 15 is practical but those cows will typically start showing their age.
