Sheridan, WI | Hello-
I am new to raising steers as of last year. Looking for some advice tailored to my situation:
-Raising some holstein steers for beef
-Steers are on pasture from June-November in Wisconsin
-They are fed straight grass hay in late Fall and now during the Winter
-Grew some ear corn this year and picked up a Gehl 135 grinder mixer
-Steers are about 8-9 months old now
-Grass hay is always available and in front of them
I just got my grinder mixer up and running (bought it as a mechanics special). I only have one screen for the grinder right now, 3/8" holes.
How many pounds of the ground ear corn can I feed them daily with the grass hay? 1-2% of body weight for the ground corn? I have heard about acidosis from feeding too much ground corn.
Realize there are better ways to raise steers, but this is the equipment and what I have to work with at the moment. Just looking for best option at present time without getting them sick. Thanks!
-Jesse
