NEMO | Well that was interesting, and I could have predicted that you would theorize all that. I'm curious what breed of bull you saw at the stud,,,some more maternal breeds have a wider head/muzzle. The other wedge/reverse wedge has been talked about forever, but sometimes I really wonder if we know half as much as we think we do. The cattle phenotype you are talking about really should be more feed efficient as far as converting grass to gain, but what grass, fescue or hard grass like the Sandhills or Flinthills? Trying to measure feed efficiency in bull tests has proved mostly worthless, and how's that translate to cow efficiency? Once again, sometimes I think we generalize to the point that we talk ourselves into something that may or may not be there. Call me crazy, but when I'm picking potential herd sires or occasionally a foundation female, I search out pedigrees with a lot of longevity both top and bottom sides. That solves a lot of problems in and of itself, it means they consistently reproduce at a high level and they are sound structured and footed, of course I visually confirm this because let's face it, it's fun to look at good cattle, oh yeah, they better act right too. So, the moral of he story is I probably don't put as much emphasis on the perfect phenotype as some folks do. I think it's interesting to listen to the Olhde's and Dvorak's, but at the same time it's not as simple as one size fits all. So, I'll stick with good feet, good bag, good attitude, decent growth, adequate muscle, and all good old cows backing the thing up. Not saying you're wrong, just maybe we really don't have all the answers
