How many miles do you typically run your "family" vehicle before trading? I'm talking the vehicle you would rely on to take a multistate trip with and expect it not to leave your family on the side of the road. I know, even new vehicles can have problems. I'm aware a few people will run a vehicle 300,000+ with extensive maintenance and trust that vehicle more than a new vehicle. However, at what mileage do you start to have some anxiety about long trips with doing just "by the operators manual" maintenance? Just curious. I currently have a Ford 1/2 ton with 185,000. Our family is possibly going to need to travel out of state multiple times in the coming months (mind you, i am in eastern North Dakota, traveling into western South Dakota in the winter).
I know it's a bit of an open ended question, just looking for others thoughts.
We ran our first Enclave to 198,000 on the original timing chains. Demoted it to a parts runner and at 206,000 the chain broke starting it one morning at -5F. Current Enclave is a 2017 we bought with 17k miles, now has 79k, I'd get in and point it towards San Antonio if the need arose. I probably wouldn't start thinking about potential problems until 150k or so.
This question obviously is very dependent on what the vehicle in question is. I know of a few Subarus with close to 400k, Suburbans/Yukons with over 300k. They're all good until they ain't, lol. |
