Without knowing the whole story I wouldn’t be too hard on the pictured heifer. I have seen some pudgy looking heifers at weaning time turn into the nicest looking cows. Once they reach puberty they change and they can change a lot.

As far as developing heifers it’s a fine line between too much energy and not enough to get them grown up. We have changed these cattle a lot in the last 50 years. They need to have enough groceries to get them grown up. I would much rather have an open yearling than an open 2 yr old.
