of all motors to repower this he thought a 555 cummins would be good???

466ta out of a 4840 would be an easy swap.

Yes, Dad thought the 555 would be good. I was 12 years old when he repowered that 7700 in 1974, replacing the factory 362 gas engine. He had already repowered a 4020 powershift with a 470 in 1968. A year later, he repowered a brand new 5020 with a 903. Those machines were performing well on our farm.

The governor on our 555 was (and is) set for 2500 rpm, same as the factory engines (gas or diesel). At 2500 the 555 was rated at 170 HP, a nice increase from 128 HP for the factory Deere engines (same HP for gas or diesel).

An oddity of the Cummins 555 engine is that the tachometer drive runs at 3/4 speed compared to most engines or that era. So, you need to multiply the hour meter X 1.33 to find the actual hours.
