1994 Volvo with M11 at 330hp and a 2000 IH 9400 with ISX at 435hp. The IH with more hp is more fun to drive but the Volvo gets the job done. Both trucks are shorter wheelbase and pull shorter dump trailers so aren't long enough to legally haul 80,000#. Both are pre emission and have under 400,000 miles and are fairly reliable. I also haul poultry litter and dump in the field so I wouldn't want too nice of a truck as dump trailers are known to tip. Truck driving is my least favorite part of the job so I don't want too nice of a truck and trailer and have to run it more to pay for/justify it. I haul grain in to my tanks then let a real trucker haul it out. Can usually get as good of a price picked up from a more distant buyer as I can hauling to the local buyer. Md has a farm area truck tag that allows you to travel in state in a 25 mile radius of your farm and costs $2.50 per year. Insurance is also cheaper with these tags. If I hauled my own grain out I'd have to upgrade tags and insurance at a much higher cost. My advice is to figure out what you want to do with your truck and to understand your state's bridge laws and buy a truck with a long enough wheel base to allow you to haul 80K legally.
