Seneca Kansas 66538 | Bought a 9250 and after a year found an air bar for it. Was better than an auger head but still found that the way it flexed in our terrian the air bar would help keep lifting the crop onto the cutterbar. Then went to a Macdon Draper and no air reel, Macdon just cuts closer and better because of the way they are designed and 95% of the time the air reel is not necessary but on the Gleaner Draper head it worked better with the air bar than without. We have plenty of terraces and the flex in the backbone and hinged cutterbar (what I call it) of the Macdon makes a big difference in keeping the cutter bar and reel relationship much closer together. Depends on your terrain, if it’s just rolling you’ll be fine without air bar. Lot of terraces save yourself a headache and get the air bar or Macdon. Run 2 Macdon and not planning on going back now because they flex better in our situation here. Macdon works more like a swather head, just kinda floats across the surface. The photo is not on a terrace but you can see the reel has a frown just on that surface that it is cutting on. 2nd pic… it’s joy once again because you can see the crop instead of the air bar and it’s not blowing leaves all over the front of the operator station and it frees up 40 hp which adds to capacity. This is a 36’ head and in that situation with a non Macdon head the cutter bar would be hanging on one side and maxed up in the center banging on the ground almost. This Macdon is just scimming the surface all the way across the cutterbar. Am I a advocate for Macdons, yup I is. Love the Gleaner even more with a Macdons…
