I simply change the mode that my hearing aids are in for various things from conversations to loud machinery. Maybe from Conversation to Outdoor with the Bluetooth control on my phone. Maybe 10 seconds and I am good to go.
I wouldn't give that up for anything but as I said I have very severe hearing loss. So his situation may be completely different.
Hearing aids: If you need them, WEAR THEM
