If you are staying somewhere near the art institute and want to walk during the daytime you will be as close to 100% safe as can be in a large city. I have no worries doing when I do that. Taking cabs or uber in the downtown area after dark is also safe. The issues in Chicago as in any large city are in the bad neighborhoods, but those areas aren't where tourist attractions are. Driving from out of town into downtown Chicago is not a problem either, just expect heavy traffic on the expressways during rush hours. I drive from downstate Illinois to the city all the time and have never had any trouble other than traffic jams.
