West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12 | Holy cow! 70 grams of carbs and 44 grams of sugar per one muffin serving are literally poison...I assume it was one big ass muffin for that much carbs and sugar per one muffin serving?

Northern Nebraska | No offense on you dietary goals but why five ingredients? I don't know if I have single recipe I make that is five or less ingredients. I'd qualify all of them as quality foods.

coast of Maine | We make most of our foods from real ingredients that does not need counting. It is an easy goal if you look at labels.Sure there are ( very few ) items to buy that are still ok for healthy eating that contain say a dozen ingredients. It keeps you aware of the crap thats in many foods. I live in the swamps of Georgia part of the winter. It is actually very nice weather,30 degrees ish for lows, mid 50 for highs, locals are all shivering,,I do not tell them that I am wearing long johns when I have no coat on,,,so quiet in the swamp that yesterday had just one car all day pass by the house,. Hinesville is crazy busy and has really changed over the decades,,a large military base brings a lot of cash flow to the city. Edited by MaineFarmer 1/10/2025 05:28

Northern Nebraska | Thanks for the clarification. I'm sometimes amazed at how complicated how much extra is added to prepackaged food. Sounds like you found a cool getaway spot for the winter.

This was the first thing I noticed when I briefed over the label, 70 grams of carbs and the 44 grams of sugar are not in my keto diet :-).

Malta, Illinois | Man, that is a prime example of the over processed crap we are being offered these days. A person really needs to be vigilant if they are going to eat even halfway healthy foods without a lot of never heard of ingredients. The struggle is real.

![]() Pittsburg, Kansas | Definitely NOT Low carb. But I fudge once in a while. Don't know whether to count this 5 or 6 ingredients, LOL. Edit: oops can't read it. Ingredients: water, malt, barley, roasted barley, hops and yeast. Edited by John Burns 1/10/2025 10:00 (20250110_115352 (full).jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

![]() Pittsburg, Kansas | The first time I ever tasted foreign extra stout was on a tour of the old Guinness factory in Ireland. They gave us a sample. I tasted it and poured it down the sink. Went back and got a diet soda, LOL. Hated it. Awful! For some crazy reason three weeks ago they had this in local Bonaire grocery store so I bought a couple for nostalgic reasons only. Son of a gun, I like it now. Since going low carb 6 years ago my tastes have changed on many things I didn't like before. This one is a bad change, LOL. I would prefer to not like it. 7.5% alcohol so for this cheap drunk (I don't drink much alcohol) only takes one on an empty stomach to kick my but. Scuba Diving over for today! coast of Maine | John ,you can eliminate the water in the Guiness as an ingredient,,you are making the grade,,,hehehe,,we all need water so you need not count that in a 5 or less and its not an ironclad rule,,just a neat guide..I have not seen that type of Guiness up here,,lots of local brewers trying to market stouts here though.

![]() Pittsburg, Kansas | Good to know! Thanks for that insight MaineFarmer. LOL First year I have noticed it here. But I am not a big beer drinker so could have missed it in the past. It is funny, not all that expensive. 1.95 a bottle, cheap beer is 1.65 for a smaller bottle, and the name brands are most all in that range. 1.80-1.90 or so. Grocery store prices that is. Not drinking establishment prices.

Late in garden season when we've got a bunch of stuff to be used up, we make pepper stout beef. Several roasts in the smoker till they've broken down enough to be shredded, then put in pans with peppers, onions, and some Guinness beer and simmer at low temperatures until everything is tender and a majority of the liquid is rendered down. Vac seals very well for the freezer, great homemade meals for busy nights when nobody has extra time to cook. ![]() Pittsburg, Kansas | Wife is more into using wine for such flavoring. But I will mention it to her. Burnt barley. While touring the old Guinness factory in Dublin they had a pan of the "toasted" barley out for us to take a pinch and taste. I would have labeled it "burnt" but they called it toasted.

I think it's the combination with smoking that really makes this work with beer. With slow cooked beef like a more conventional roast in the crock pot, we also typically use red wine or vermouth as part of the liquid.
