I still have my Dad's Savage single shot bolt action .22 that he bought for himself when he was a kid(born in 1918). He told me that he paid $5 for it with the money he earned picking green beans for 1/2 cent per pound.

I was never allowed a BB gun, but I could use that .22 anytime I wanted, only with Shorts. Never had Long Rifles in the house. Used to be able to buy ammo at the hardware store in the village. I shot lots of songbirds and weather vanes.
