Malta, Illinois | We are a household of 2 and probably use about 3 dozen eggs a month. That's 36 dozen eggs a year and at $9 a dozen that would put us at $324 a year for eggs. Spendy? Perhaps but I am not about to screw around with chickens and all of the loveliness that goes with them for a lousy $324 a year. Now a big family that goes through a lot of eggs it probably makes some sense. You have the labor to help with the chickens and the mess and you have an almost endless supply of eggs. One would still need to do the math on the cost to set up the enterprise, and the cost of feed. It would still make sense for a lot of people but I think the advantage shrinks a lot. Groceries for big families are a real issue the past several years and I could see where those folks would benefit from having their own layers. | |
