Backyard chickens IMO is the way to go.   We have 9 hens, usually had around 15 but got wiped out last February by bird flu.   Wife decided 9 was enough.   I don't see how backyard chickens increases the problems with bird flu.   We got it only because the dogs dragged a couple of dead geese home and apparently they had it.   I would think the large commercial flocks would be more susceptible to it.
