Bar codes were designed for laser scanners, which were technology of the 70s, and are now mostly obsolete.
Fifty years later, we now have inexpensive cameras and much faster microprocessors, which can read all types of codes instantly.
If you're going to choose one type of code, the QR code can contain a lot more than 12 digits.
