west-byGod-Pa. | Gun story of an entirely different sort.
While in junior high school band (1967- maybe), the band director decided that for a concert, we would do Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, which was written to celebrate Russia's defeat of Napoleon. For special effects, he wanted to use shotguns firing blanks to mimic the canon fusillade as represented by big drums in a normal orchestration. I volunteered my father's two break- open shotguns & brought them into school, taking them to the band room. No one stopped me.
The actual concert was amazing. The audience was warned that the canon would be loud- and they sure were. They brought barrels, laid them on saw horses & had teachers operate pump shotguns into the barrels( blanks- obviously). How the teachers could tolerate such blasts back behind the stage I do not know. An amazing production as all the shots come at the end, along with bells to mimic church bells rung in celebration. The auditorium was filled with gun smoke. Could not do that today: would not be allowed. | |
