Subject: favorite gun stories

One of my favorite guns is my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter model in .44 magnum. The reason it is a favorite is the journey to buy it.
I had a Super Blackhawk in .44 mag and sold it in the summer of 1994 to purchase a hunter model for the integrated scope rail. I went to my gun dealer and ordered the hunter model later that summer. He told me the warehouse said they had 2 in stock. The next day, he told me the warehouse called and said "there were none on the shelf when they went to get it" which meant there were none they were going to sell him. Most likely they were holding for bigger volume dealers he felt. We also learned at this time, Ruger had stopped production on this particular model.
This began my search for the elusive Ruger. I went to every dealer in the area to no avail. I went to every gun show for the next several years and found none. Every week I bought the area trader papers and only found one that had been heavily modified. When on vacation and I drove past a gun shop, I stopped in looking for one. I called Ruger at least 2 times a year and spoke to a nice lady in production asking if they were going to build them again. She would usually say "sometime but don't know when."

In the meantime, I bought a Dan Wesson 357 Maximum that was an absolute beast of a hand cannon for hunting but never stopped looking for the elusive .44.
Finally in 2001 a friend who was a gun nut stopped by the dealership came in and slapped down a copy of Guns and Ammo opened to a full page add announcing the return of the Blackhawk Hunter. Without saying a word, I picked up the phone and called a friend of mine who owned Plainfield Shooting Supply in Plainfield Indiana. At that time He was the largest volume gun dealer in the Indianapolis area. I asked him if he had any in stock and he said he has 3. I said "put my name on one and I will be down"
So, on the last Saturday in December 2001, I finally bagged my elusive quarry after 7 1/2 years and it will never get sold or traded for anything.
