I haven't actually looked into the research but most of the "food" studies are junk and alcohol could be similar. For example they will take into account only one aspect like, how many times a week do you eat meat? And we know there is a difference in the healthiness between a steak and hot dogs. Could it be that alcohol studies are very similar? For example how many people that smoke also drink alcohol, or if you drink alcohol you are less likely to get adequate physical exercise and that is what aactuallhelps cause cancer. Maybe if you drink more you tend to eat more bar food which is fried in seed oils. Basically the alcohol could indicate an unhealthy lifestyle.
