From the ones I've been in (quite a few) and been around (a lot) I like the Honda Pioneer 1000 the best. You said it's the only shaft drive. That trans and motor combo are really nice. I'm not a big fan of their 500 and I'm a sort-of fan of the 700 but neither holds a candle to the 1000. 

Kawi Mule and Can Am Defender would be next in my list along w/ JD gator. Lots of them with LOTS of hours around and still going. 

Polaris is a long way down the list but you're right about price and toys.
