Subject: RE: Bull buying question

Eastern NE KS
I raise and sell 10-12 bulls per year. Occasionally I will offer a $3000 bull which to me is a healthy discount to my average price around $4500. At weaning as a group, these guys show potential for being good spread bulls, both calving ease and performance among the required other attributes looked for in a herd bull.

Typically a discounted bull is the one the visitors didn't consider for there needs and they became 'ripe bananas'. If I can get the bull sold at $3000, that is more revenue than at the sale barn. Yet, he is a commodity that needs to move on and the sooner the better.

My sales area is dominated by folks with just one herd sire that needs to cover heifers as well as cows. More often than not, the ripe banana bull is a growthy performance leader with a little added birth weight, useful for mature cows. And my visiting bull buyers pass on that bull.
