i've run nothing but 9" on mine since new. the shank spacing is actually 7"
so personally i don't think anything smaller than 9" would be effective.
bigger weeds sometimes escape with 9" sweeps. as far as broken sweeps,
i read about that problem, but personally haven't experienced it.
