NE Indiana-Fort Wayne and NE China | You can freeze water lines at 4 feet and have no impact on compacted soils above that depth. The freezing temp has impact on free water contained in the soil macropores. The problem is that compacted strata don't have macropore space and are only slowly hydrated. Any freezing impact on soil structure is invariably associated with soil above the compacted zone. Evidence of this is broken alfalfa taproots from heaving caused by water perched above zones of slow percolation character.
