WCIL | We have a lot of tight river bottom ground and have similar issues some years. After soybeans going to corn, we disk chisel some of the lighter soils but use a Dominator on the tighter gumbo. Seems like that along with some freezing mellows it out (though usually not too many extremely deep freezes here). If we don't chisel or rip, the corn will be uneven and yields suffer. We no till soybeans and they do well. Cover crops are no go because in a wet year it will not dry out to plant. Ground is tiled amd surface drained, and we do some gypsum to help with the magnesium, but it doesn't change the soil type or how it lays. I think you are on the right track. My family has been on this dirt for 80 years and are willing to learn, but many things have been tried by us and neighbors, and fall tillage is what consistently works here. | |
