Michigan | In Central Michigan the last several years we have been extremely waterlogged in the fall followed by almost no frozen ground and it seems the compaction has caught up to us. With the dry fall and harvest being completed we are trying all different methods from zone builder at 14” to spikes on coulter chisel at 8”+ to disk ripping at 10”+ to moldboard plowing. The ground is hard!!! We think we are accomplishing something but a deep freeze would do a lot we think. Our ground is extremely tight red clay probably “gumbo” in others description. Seems like if it freezes like this on the drier side it would be better than water logged. Also seems like it would freeze/thaw better if chiseled. What is the best things you have done to help compaction. And no, cover crops or no till isn’t really an option for us for many reasons. Really liking the looks of the new Degelman HDSR ripper!
