My son has a 2008 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 with almost 400,000 kilometers and never changed the trans fluid. From my experience from working in the garage years ago. Either change according to manual or never change. The valve body gets gummed up and when you change it cleans that out and then the trans fails. Talked to a transmissions guy and he said still true today on new automatics.
