Subject: RE: JD 71 Planter

Thumb of Michigan
71 units are excellent for sugar beets. IH had a similar planter in the same time frame as the 71 units, they're good as well. You might look for those also, used to be a lot of those around. I think they were a model 56 maybe?

Back to 71 units: they have a short seed drop. Thats an advantage with any small seed especially. They had a good selection of gears for seeding rate. They don't go through very much residue at all. Theres no central gear box like newer planters, so each unit needs to be set for seeding rate. Depth control wasn't too hard to set pretty accurately. We planted both with a without depth bands, not sure how easy they could be found anymore.

We have 12 complete plate hoppers for a 7000 planter. They're the same bottoms , drives, and plates as a 71 unit. Not really interested in splitting them up, just mentioning that so you know what to keep an eye out for. When 7000 planters first came out, there really wasn't much you could do for beets other than buy the plate stuff. We ran plates for beets, and converted to plateless after the beets were in.

I'm going to assume you called around to all the dealers in the beet growing area already?
