NC Kansas
We sell seed and treat in bulk through a drum treater but also have experience with a box-to-box treater too... The mark up on actual treatment/inoculant cost can be anywhere from $5-10 per unit. So that's the margin that is saved, but as others have said there is hassle and up-keep, and over applying due to not having it calibrated correctly can cost you real $$$. If you don't have a forklift there is some stress and danger handling a lot of boxes with a skid steer or tractor/pallet forks. It's one of those things that setting up to start and cleaning up when done, about 10-15 boxes will take most of a day. Most of those treaters cost quite a bit too so it will take quite a bit of volume over the years to pay it back. Not trying to talk you out of it, but many people complain about the seed guy and how much money they make and how much seed costs... but it's not that easy. If you have the time and support equipment to do it and can find a good cheap used one, it'll probably work out.
