Yours is on the ceiling so it will be a little trickier than mine. This is how I patched the wall when I had to fix the shower valve. The old one wouldn't come out, so replace the whole thing. Luckily my wife tolerates my fixes. We did have a complete bathroom remodel planned last winter so it was meant to be a funny fix to cover the hole, but the remodel was delayed to this January. The hole and the pic are still there.
