| Not sure there is a wrong or right answer, I would cut it out because I tend to be old school the other way sounds easier and quicker and if you are happy with the result, if it does not work the way you think it should you can always try cutting it out, or doing a more extensive repair by replacing the sheetrock with green board. Additional thought I had is like Junkfun said how well is it insulated above, this depends on how cold you get in the cold season somewhat. This house corner crack along the wall dividing the house in 1/2 (most of the length of the house) would open up seasonally, think it was in the winter with a snow load which is counterintuitive. I was lucky the gang nails were over the partition so I toenailed the trusses to the plate and it cured that issue. | |
