South Central MN | I was about to mention that is what I seem to hear also when it is quiet, so far doesn't bother conversations at all but just unusual hearing crickets in the middle of the winter. Isn't real loud either so I can still tell the difference between the live ones and the ghost crickets.
Don't know where I ran across it but tinnitus is basically the brain trying to interpret signals from your hearing that might be a bit messed up from damage done to the system. Guess the crickets are a basic default for what I "hear" when everything is silent. Better than some of the other sounds that I have heard it described as though. (ringing, roaring, ect.)
Makes it darned hard to do well on a hearing test though. Always seemed to have some sort of "noise" I was hearing even when I was younger. Last time mine was still good but seems like I have to really focus on listening for the quiet ones at certain pitches.
