Swede, did you read Bean's post above? A lot of these modern Angus are still growing at 3 and beyond. Let's see, picking the wrong kind of bulls to keep heifers out of, no crossbreeding, coupled with any environmental stress (drought, heat, flies)((Anaplasmosis in MO, do you have that in the Dakota's?)), and then you have problems. I will say this, I bet you're doing better than a lot of folks with a 20 percent fall out in the first 2 years. Acceptable? Not really, but not a total train wreck for some. And yes, those young fallout cows end up in MO, many as fall calvers. I have a neighbor that buys western origin young cows as stage 2's, never keeps a heifer. You can about always tell, lots of different brands, and that typical wild eyed Angus, I'm gonna kick you on the way past for fun. But, they're Western origin, so the must be better than what us dumb MO boys can raise

Yes I read all the posts above. I’m open to criticism and I have thick skin, that’s why I brought up the topic. Yes you are correct, these opens will be rebreeds to increase their value by spring, but I doubt they’ll end up in MO. There’s plenty of demand for young fall breds locally. We had a hailstorm that flattened most of our native range about three weeks after bull turnout. Only about 10% of our pasture was spared which led to me having to slow down the rotation and leave the herd in paddocks longer which led to less nutrition I’m sure. We weaned sooner than normal and got the cows to cornstalks. Not sue if that had any bearing on the problem but it might have.
