After researching the fine vs standard mesh. I would go with the regular mesh. One of the reasons I found water softeners fail is caked resin. The water just makes a channel through the resin. Another reason is salt caked in the brine tank. The easiest way to combat this is always use solar salt. It doesn't have any binder in it to make fancy pellets. If you do have some iron use iron out. Just mix some in water and pour it in the brine well. There are some liquid resin cleaners that also work well. The cheapest way is to use a product like iron out rather than resin cleaner salt.
