You can purchase water hardness test kits, and a water softener supply house or service should also be able to help.
Soft water for the livestock is not really necessary, it has no direct effect on drinking water safety or animal health, but helps with equipment, plumbing, and waterer maintenance. With one line running out of the house to the out buildings that was the easy option.
