Subject: Water softener fine vs normal?

North Central US
There is about a $40 difference between the normal style and the fine style. Is it worth the extra $40?

Trying to find the difference online, all I am finding are discussions on whether or not it will remove x amount of iron, so I assume it has something to do with iron. The rural water we have is extremely hard, and has some, but not anything significant, iron in it.

The fine type to me sounds better, since it has more surface area, from my understanding. We no longer have a water softener man either, we just have the big box stores.

Also, how does one calculate how to set one, when all their calculations have "number of people" as part of the equation? Its for washing equipment in a shop.(yes, we want a softener there, that is happening no matter what).
