Subject: Reaction Arm E-bearing failure and repair—Good News (Fendt 900/1100MT, AGCO Challenger MT700/800)

Eastern Washington State
Around 18 months ago, a friend in southern Washington who owns 7 of these rubber track machines approached me about diagnosing the reaction arm E-bearing failures he was consistently experiencing. Most of his machines had experienced at least one E-bearing failure, and one had blown up five bearings.

As a machinist and repair professional who has repaired thousands of bearing and seal surfaces on both farm and mining equipment for almost three decades, I’m well acquainted with common causes of bearing failure. In this case, the cause of many of these E-bearing failures is a simple—but costly—manufacturing defect.

Since May of 2023, we have diagnosed and repaired 14 AGCO/Fendt E-bearing housings for several customers in Washington and Oregon. In a nutshell, the bore of every original housing that we measured was oval—as much as 0.0084”.

An oval bore will distort the outer Timken bearing race and cause the bearing cone under load to “grab” the oval cup and twist it in the housing. This twisting force is great enough to shear the pins that have been installed in the housing specifically to prevent this failure. All this grabbing and shearing translates into a lot of metal chips and a very expensive repair and related downtime.

The GOOD NEWS is that we’ve developed a very cost-effective repair for these housings using the same technology we’ve used to rebuild over 1,000 mining truck wheel group components. All the E-bearing housings that we’ve repaired and that have been installed are still in service and show no signs of degradation after up to 1500 hours of operation.

For those interested, I’ve attached a technical failure analysis and repair option report for these reaction arm housings.
