| Some of the nitrogen in DAP and MAP can be lost through volatilization of NH3 when DAP and MAP are broadcast and left unincorporated but the risk of volatilization is MUCH lower than the risk associated with urea. The risk is highest if the soil surface has a high pH (>7.5 such as calcareous soils) and the weather is warm and dry. The risk of volatilization at this time of year in the Upper Midwest is VERY low.
The ammonium (NH4+) in DAP and MAP can also be converted to nitrate (mostly not until soils warm up next spring) and then lost by leaching or denitrification. Incorporation does NOT prevent this loss pathway.
