NNW Nebraska | I have a hay meadow and a pasture that joins corners at my corral. I Put the calves in the corral and open the gate to the meadow.
The cows can come up to the side of the corral. Electric fence out away from the corral both directions. Since the cows and calves can get nose to nose at the edge of the steel corral, they don't try to find a place to tear the fence down. I do put feed bunks in the corral for a few days then move them out.
After doing it this way, I hardly ever have a sick calf. When I locked calves in the corral, I often had several get sick.
My corral really isn't big enough to have them all locked up. They fit but are more crowded than would be good.
If the calves get spooked, usually many of them are out on the meadow so they make it out the gate without taking out the side of the corral or breaking any necks. | |
