Paxton, IL | Shutoff's that are used appropriately are a good way to maximize battery life.
I would think equipment of that vintage wouldn't draw too much power in storage anyway, but there is probably still at least a digital radio drawing constant power. Whatever you can do to keep the batteries from drawing down and especially sitting with a low or no charge for any length of time helps a lot.
Good battery maintainers can also do a good job of keeping the battery charged, but you need to make sure it has a good control circuit that won't overcharge the battery too. You also need to have power available. There are some good solar trickle chargers out there too that probably do a good job, but I don't have much experience with any.
Of course, at some point the batteries will just be at the end of their useful life and have a tenancy to self discharge regardless of what you do. They should hopefully last 6 years depending on service life, but I wouldn't necessarily expect much beyond that. I've used several different brands of batteries over the years, but at around 7 years or so, all seem to be about 50/50 after that. | |
