NW Iowa | My dad was always too cautious to change to something new right away. He was a nice enough person but he was critical of others behind the scene and never gave out a compliment about anything I did for probably the first thirty five years I farmed. He never ever directly complimented me for doing something right. Instead, he would pick out with some little reason why it will fail. And he would rub my nose in the dirt figuratively if I mad a mistake.
Then after those first 35 years, just out of the blue he told me he could never have farmed the way I farm. After I thought about it awhile he was telling me I have done a better more progressive job at farming than he did. Then later he told me I have raised the value of the farm through certain ways I have treated the land.
Because of the way I was raised I have never criticized my son, ever! If he makes a mistake I will tell him we all make mistakes, it’s human. Now if he messes up the first thing he does is call me to tell me about it just to get it off his chest. | |
