I'm not so sure on that. No matter what size the dairy is most of the dairymen I know seem to have their face right in the fan at all times.
There are a few around here that are extremely short on labor, crops are put up late, not sprayed, planted or harvested on time and I can only imagine what the bulk tank is doing. I honestly have no idea how they are making it because what they have for facilities is not what I would consider low cost.
It's not easy, by any stretch, and some are going to do better than others. Labor is just a matter of maxing out your resources. It can work if you've got an abundance of your own cheap labor to throw at the project for at least the first several years. As far as facilities, a grazing system and a cheap parlor can get you pretty far for not a lot of money invested in facilities. |
